Bella Furst Week 3 | Zombies but Make it Quarantine

Zombies but Make it Quarantine

#Alive Film Review/Recommendation

So while holed up at home, I have discovered a newfound love for Korean thriller/horror films and when I saw Netflix adding a new one, it was all I needed in my life. It’s this film called #Alive and no amount of words could describe how much I enjoyed the movie. The fear, the deception, the legitimate terror; it was crazy. It takes the concept of zombie apocalypse but mixes it with being stuck at home and the negatives of being alone for weeks with no human contact and resources... and the risk of borderline losing it.

It’s difficult to talk about the movie without spoiling it, but it starts with Jun-Woo, just some guy who likes to play video games logging on to play with some friends when a bunch of people tell him to turn on the news. Not only is he home alone with a near-empty fridge, but a nationwide epidemic has started. This incredibly contagious virus spreads via blood (hence the biting) and causes people to become incredibly violent and exhibit cannibalistic tendencies. The audience follows the struggle of watching Jun-Woo's determination to survive and live off what he can; little food, lack of connection to the outside world, and the dangers of his own self. It gets difficult when he even sees people just outside his own window attacking and ferociously attempting to eat the uninfected.

Maybe you’re like me and don’t like zombie movies, which is why I would recommend this to you. For me, zombie movies feel generic and drawn out and are only really fun the first few times. But a lot of the ideas and how they were executed in this film were just amazing in my eyes and I overall just really enjoyed it. Not-so-little warning if you are sensitive to blood/gore because there’s a lot of that. There’s not much CGI with this and the SFX makeup is honestly incredible. I really loved the fact it doesn't use cheesy cinematography tricks like jump-scares just to make you afraid because the suspense is honestly enough. The acting is also phenomenal and it has that semi-realistic feel to it.

I really hope the fact that it's not in English won't turn you away from it because this would 100% be something Oscar nominated had it been an American film rather than an international one (yes, I know international films win Oscars too but chill). If you’re looking for a quick way to waste an hour and a half on Netflix, let it be for this movie. Please. It’s so good and then we can talk about it. Because it’s great.

What would you do if a zombie apocalypse started while you were stuck in your home with minimal resources? (I think I’d probably cry and then watch more horror movies.)
