Chaya Brenner week 3 - Strawberries - Satan’s Fruit or Actually Delicious?

Recently I heard someone say strawberries are never quite as delicious as they look like they should be. And honestly, I agree. Now hear me out because I know you’re thinking about how I’m very wrong and stupid. Strawberries at a first glance are so visually appealing. The red is so gorgeous and bright, their cute little green stems are so sweet, and the little yellow seeds are so cute. But when you actually eat one don’t you feel a little disappointed? They’re always too ripe or not ripe enough. And they get those little bruised spots and squishy areas that are just gross. I’ll admit I’m just a bit picky about my fruit, but I feel like there are always a ton of bad berries in the pack.

For my next point strawberries aren’t actually even berries. Though they have berry in the freaking name, botanically speaking, strawberries are not real berries. Due to the fact that they come from a singular flower that has multiple ovaries they are actually considered aggregate fruits. A real berry would come from a flower with only one ovary. So yeah, whoever names fruits lied to all of us with the naming of strawberries (and raspberries actually).

Strawberries are drilled into our brains to be these wonderful and delicious fruits, but are they really that good? Think about all the places you see cute strawberries used as marketing. The Instagram famous strawberry dress is a great example, people love it because of its majestic flowy style and cute little strawberries. The dress makes the point that strawberries = good. What about the show Strawberry Shortcake? The main character’s entire being is based off of strawberries, she is literally a strawberry girl. So once again you are forced into this mindset of strawberries are the best fruit.

Strawberries also don’t last too long in the fridge either.  You have them for like a few days and they’re already moldy and disgusting. But who boys strawberries and eats the entire carton on the day of? And if they get moldy you can’t eat them because I’m pretty sure mold is bad for you. So then what are you even supposed to do with the strawberries, it’s not like you can just eat the mold and pray you’re ok. That’s dangerous and dumb.

Maybe I’m insane and maybe I’m on to something. Either way, what do you think? And do you think there are other fruits that are overrated?

  1. Personally, I only like strawberries in smoothies as opposed to eating them alone. They just don't taste good to me unless they are in a drink or mixed with something else. That is just my opinion though.

  2. That is very interesting. I personally do not like strawberries as much as I used to when I was younger. The only reason I used to like them was the visually appealing aspect to them. Ironically fruits like pineapple have the opposite situation, from the outside the fruit looks unappealing with its spikes, but on the inside pineapples are quite sweet.

  3. I myself am I big fan of strawberries, but I agree that I too used to enjoy them more when I was younger. Now, I find that they are either too sour, or bruised. And, they go bad so quickly!! That said, when you have a good pack of strawberries, they are amazing, and for me that is worth it:)) I still love strawberries!

  4. I would kill to see Sienna respond to this because of her passionate love for strawberries. But Chaya, I might break the platonic soulmate bond :( Strawberries ARE the best and it's so rare that I feel disappointed from eating one. I think the problem is that your family doesn't know to pick a good pack of strawberries. Do you not check your fruit before buying it???

  5. Wait... I actually agree with you. Strawberries are much better with Nutella the by themselves because if the strawberry is a little bit too tart or not the right flavor, the Nutella always fixes it!!

  6. Well I agree, but that's probably because I have a phobia of strawberries. I know, it's weird. I don't really know why i am scared of them, like I love the colors red and green, and the little seeds don's bother me. It's strange, but they are just something i've always been scared of. However, I do like strawberries in smoothies when mixed with other fruit like bananas.

  7. I notice less and less people like strawberries now, and I could honestly say that I feel like they've been getting worse and good packs are harder to find?? I'm also really picky about my fruit, so I won't eat it if it's bruised or squishy...

  8. So here's how you know strawberries can't be trusted: as far as I'm aware, they're the only fruit that have their seeds on the exterior. Other fruit hide their seeds within them, but not strawberries, they're not even gonna pretend this was ever about you. You're just a tool to spread their seeds.
