Living in the Moment - week 1

  Living in the Moment

A couple of days ago, I was watching a Grey's Anatomy episode where a cheerful, pregnant couple came into the hospital because the wife slipped in the shower. The wife nonchalantly stated that the baby felt unusually still, but the husband brushed it off and reminded her that the baby could just be asleep. The couple was so happy and in love that they couldn't possibly imagine the possibility that their baby could have died. The doctors, Addison Montgomery and Callie Torres, who knew the reality of the situation, stepped outside to discuss how they would break the news to the young couple. Addison knew she had to disclose the heartbreaking news to the couple, but the thought of ruining their cheerful mood was too much for her to bare. The fact that only yesterday, everything had just been fine, and today, her baby is dead made Addison weep uncontrollably. Many people believe in the concept of Karma. Karma is the idea that what goes around comes around. Good, happy people deserve good happy things. Unfortunately, things don't always work out like this. But if this is true, then why do people still believe in Karma? The answer is that people believe in Karma because it helps them get through life. Sometimes the idea of not being in control, of the possibility that anything could happen to them at any time, is too much for people to bare. So Addison, knowing that it was her responsibility for her to deliver this ungodly news to this couple, decided to wait a few more minutes... just a few more minutes of time for this couple to experience happiness, because as soon as the news is delivered to them, the happiness is over. I find it so amusing that they were about to experience the unimaginable: the loss of a child. Yet, they were happy in that moment. Imagine if we had the power to know when exactly something bad was going to happen to us. I think that if we had this power, we would never be happy. Happiness is about living in the present, so who can be happy when they have the power to see into the future? The idea that we can experience happiness only to experience devastation a moment later is scary, which is why living in the moment is such a valuable skill to learn.

  1. What you said about learning to live in the moment is so true! Indeed, it's super valuable, but also challenging. It took me a long time to realize that the reason I worry about so many things is because I keep thinking about the future (and all that does is waste time). Life is a lot more enjoyable when you're emotionally present.
