Today is October 1st. Wow. October. First. It has crazy how much time has flown by since the world stopped in March. Back then, the process of applying to colleges seemed so far away. I was still studying for my SAT, aiming to take it in June. Writing my common app essay hadn't even crossed my mind yet.
But today, on October 1st, I sit here wondering where all the time went. I am halfway through the application process, yet I still haven't taken the SAT. Standardized tests are dumb, and not an accurate depiction of a student's academic capabilities, anyway. I will lean on my GPA, extracurricular activities, along with my essays and interviews to get me into my desired schools.
I sit here thinking about how nothing turned out how I expected it to be. It's not necessarily bad, just different. In March, I was free to go to any school I set my heart on. Today, I have to take notice of financial factors (who wants to pay 60,000/year to be on zoom?), school size factors (will a school with 20,000 students be more dangerous than a school with 5,000 students?), and distance factors (do I really want to be so far from my family when so much violence is occurring in cities like Portland, Minneapolis, and NYC?). Although most of the things I thought I wanted in a college in March have changed by now, I am okay with it. The world is evolving, and I am evolving with it. In exactly two weeks is the UNC application deadline, the first of many.
P.S. October is such an exciting month for me, especially this year because there is a break at the end, which is supposed to be a slot for parent-teacher conferences. I would love to use this break to see my brother in Utah, but right now it's just a thought and I haven't actually asked my parents or my brother's parents yet so pray for me that they say yes and I can go visit!!
I also can't believe it is already October and applications are due so soon! Also, my ACT is on Tuesday and it is only my second one and my last, so I need a good score. I hope you can go see Cam<3 That would be so nice!
ReplyDeleteThis year just went so quickly. Probably because quarantine has felt like forever, but the college stress has started hitting me lately. I have deadlines November 1st for a few of my colleges and I've officially hit panic mode. I think it's crazy that in March none of us thought about any of this and now our college reality is so different than what we initially anticipated. Remember when the seniors were complaining they got no prom and we laughed? Little did we know, huh.
