Liann Rozenberg Week 6 - Getting Nails Done

Funny story - In middle school I remember this one girl would get a gel manicure almost every two weeks! For those of you who don’t know, this could be about $40 to $60. Turns out… I started getting my nails done every 3-4 weeks! I do NexGen, which is a powder you dip your nails into, and then it dries into sort of what looks like plastic. People do this instead of gel because gel involves a UV light, which could be damaging to your skin. Another reason people get NexGen is that it lasts much longer than regular polish, but looks a little odd when the nails start to grow.

So I got NexGen done for Rosh Hashanah about 3 weeks ago and I usually do classy colors like a light pink or white. I never really get any crazy designs, but I started going to a new guy, Tony, and he was pretty professional in cool designs. He told me he could do an ombre pink to white. I did it, but it was $60 and I usually pay $40. It was worth it for one time because I got them done for my birthday.

Tragically, I got them done way too long, and on the first day of school, I hit my thumbnail pretty bad on the car door. It hurt all day but stopped hurting the next day. A week later, I slammed it in the door really badly. It was bleeding from all sides and I have never felt a pain so bad. I thought it was a subungual hematoma, which is bleeding and bruising under the nail, but I could not see because of the NexGen. Now you might say, “well go remove the NexGen,” but removing it takes 15 minutes because you need to soak it in acetone and scrub it off with some machine the nail salons have. There was no way I was going to do that because I couldn’t even touch the nail without crying. I called the urgent care nurse and she said to not even come in because she couldn’t see the nail. So, I went to the hospital. They did not do anything, which was kind of crazy, I mean, I was in excruciating pain. So, not only was it no help at all… they billed us $800. Crazy health care in America, but that’s for another blog maybe someday.

So now I let it heal on its own and got the NexGen off today. Let me tell you, it looks very bruised and scary. Long story short, don’t pay too much money for your nails, and don’t get them too long.

Have you ever gotten your nails done with NexGen?

  1. I don’t get why girls like to get their nails done like that. I like mine short so that if I hit the tip of my finger it doesn’t hurt like crazy. Despite that, that actually looks pretty cool.
