Gaya Avidor Week 11 Pick a Poet Blog - New Year’s Day by Kim Addonizio

The poem I selected this week is “New Year’s Day” written by Kim Addonizio. This poem talks about personal experiences while Kim is walking in the cold, wintery, day of a new year. The title is pretty self explanatory, as she is literally experiencing the first day to a new year, but she explains how she is alone. She continues walking, and all that’s around her are some cows with their heads lowered. She uses a simile to compare the cows to the girls that she used to attend high school with. I thought this was interesting because usually comparing someone to a cow would be quite offensive, but in this case she was only comparing their posture to the cows stating that “they are like girls I remember from junior high, who never spoke, who kept their heads lowered…” She then continues to talk about how she doesn’t care for those girls but wonders if they all reflect back on life in the same way. To me, reflecting on past experiences can sometimes be a scary thing to do. You might realize that you didn’t handle some situations in a good way, but you are also able to look back on memories that you created. I feel that reflecting also emphasizes how fast time goes by, and how a single moment can so fast become a past memory. As Kim takes a walk on this rainy first day of a new year, she reflects on past life experiences and wishes to just “walk a little longer” and feel blessed for the present.

  1. Although I only read your short analysis of it, I love this poem! It seems so real and I completely agree that we can get so wrapped up in the future or the past and completely miss the present. Everything goes by so quickly and sometimes it's scary to look back.

  2. I agree with what you said about reflecting on the past. It can be a mix of so many emotions, especially regret when thinking back to how a situation could have been handled better. But, it's so important to value the present. it's funny how when we do something embarrassing, we immediately know that we're going to remember it for years, yet when we are actually enjoying ourselves, we don't recognize it until that time is long behind us.

    1. Ya that's actually so crazy to think about that... I haven't thought of it that way.

  3. the cow part is interesting... the famous comparison to a cow is when people say "im so fat Im a cow." so I love how the author found a different attribute of a cow to compare to the girls.

  4. I initially clicked on this because I thought the photo of your poet was Jim Morrison when I glanced at it. Upon my realization that it wasn't I still decided to read what you wrote. I'm glad I read this because you brought up many insightful interpretations on the past. My favorite line was when you spoke of "how a single moment can so fast become a past memory." Whenever I am with friends, family, or doing something I enjoy I savor that moment because I know that one day I'll back on it with nostalgia. It's very strange how the memories I have made over the years at one point in time were just moments.
