Week 14: Amy Kraft -Time to take matters into our own hands with virtual learning

I am assuming we have all come to the same conclusion about virtual learning this year; it sucks. I for sure miss seeing my friends and teachers during the school day, and even if we were able to go back through hybrid learning, it just wasn’t the same. I miss my awkwardly comfortable naps on the couches upstairs or in Mrs. Noinman’s office; naps at home just don't have the same experience. They just aren’t as special. I miss whispering snarky comments to my friends in class to keep me entertained. Now even if we are in class we can't whisper or mouth words because of the masks. And on top of all of that, it’s our senior year. We have spent the last 12 years looking forward to this supposedly fun year. However, there are still some things you can do to make this year and virtual learning a little more enjoyable.

Because of sports, I, among many other students in our grade, have been subjected to strictly at-home learning, which is not ideal, but over the past threeish weeks, Dana and I have decided to take matters into our own hands and do our zoom classes outside on our neighborhood’s field. Like why not enjoy the wonderful weather that we only have for a few weeks during the year? Sure there were some complications, like the Wi-Fi not being the best, or our computers dying because zoom just sucks the battery out, or even the floor not being so comfortable, but we have come up with solutions. We use our phone’s hot spots or the clubhouse’s Wi-Fi, which actually works really well under one of the umbrellas. We bring chargers for our computers so we can charge them during lunch by the water fountains and bathrooms, and we brought pillows and blankets to sit on. After all of our creative solutions, virtual learning turns out to be not so horrible, it might be even better than in-school hybrid learning.

  1. I agree, it has been a nice couple of weeks doing school from a new setting. It keeps me more focused when I'm not rolling right out of bed and doing class in my dark room. The sunlight is nice and wakes me up. I'm glad we found the silver lining in having to stay home for sports.
