Gabriel Winter- "Carpentry" By Carl Dennis- week 18

Carpentry

By Carl Dennis

The poem "Carpentry" by Carl Dennis is a poem about a lonely man who has dedicated his life to his work of carpentry. He has been left by everyone who loves him and has devoted all of his life to his job. He makes sure that everything is perfect and makes sure that there is no stone unturned in hopes that the people who will move into the house will be happier than he is.

This poem is a very eye opening poem to the life of a man who "was so happy hammering houses
That he jumped with a shout from the roof beam (Dennis Line 5-6)." The author does a great job of showing us that although he is a man who may not have a lot and is a man who does not have people he can turn to, he still has happiness in his life, the happiness being making others lives easier.

This lesson can be related to many things in our lives. One of these lessons shows us that we must be happy with what we do in life. No matter what others say about what we do and no matter the judgement we must all allow ourselves to love what we do and only do what makes us happy which is what we learn just by reading this poem.

  1. I agree Gabriel. We should do what makes us happy in life. Amen.

  2. This poem sounds both beautiful and sad. Often, it's easy to get caught up in the expectations of others and social standards, that we forget happiness is one of the most important things in life that keeps us driven and motivated! Though he is alone, at least he's able to find happiness in doing what he loves (this, in many cases, could be the reality so many people have faced in their lives).

  3. I think that at the end of the day all we can ask for in our lives is purpose. The lonely man in the poem is kept alive by his purpose to make carpentry.

  4. This poem honestly sounds really sad on your first paragraph alone, but the overall sentiment is lovely. I agree a lot with Sienna, in that we are often preoccupied and forget to just do the things that make us happy. I think a lot of people wish to do something that makes them happy, but don't put in the effort to get to that place, so seeing this carpenter live out his dream is really admirable.
