Sarah Louis week 18- Rae Armantrout (Bubble Wrap)

 Bubble Wrap

This week I read a poem called Bubble Wrap by Rae Armantrout. It was quite frank, yet relatable. It is about normal day occurrences such as nightmares, lust, fights with roommates, and tragic events going on across the world. I like how realistic Rae Armantrout portrays life as she describes how negative it could be starting with turning "on CNN to see if there have been any disasters." It is said that we expect to learn of an unfortunate event every time we turn on the tv. Humans have become so accustomed to coping with the tragedy that it barely phases us anymore. It is up to us to look for the positive moments in life by not getting so caught up with the rush of adrenaline every time we hear something dramatic happens or have an argument with a friend.

At the end of the day, life is pretty short so we have to live in the moment, have an optimistic outlook on the world, and use every moment we have to create a positive change in this world. Clearly, there needs to be more light brought into this world and it is up to us to look within ourselves to become the source of illumination and project beams of light from within.

Rae ends the poem by describing that while all these minor inconveniences are happening, an immigrant is working hard to make money by selling goods on a street corner. That line was very compelling as it put everything into perspective. Many do not even have time to get annoyed or angry over situations. Rather they take their life situation in stride and make the most out of it. That is very admirable to me.

Do you agree that humans need to be more positive in life?

  1. I love the message of this poem! I completely agree, life is so short so we just have to enjoy it. Even with the inconveniences, you have to take everything with a grain of salt.

  2. Trying to cultivate a positive mindset is great, but focusing on "staying positive" is unhealthy if it means suppressing negative feelings. Overall, we need to be mindful of all of our emotions, and making the effort to be in an environment that naturally guides us to feeling positive certainly helps someone's general state of mind.
