Why is the idea of "almost dying" so fun?? week 18 Zoey Eisenband

Why is the idea of “almost dying” so fun? For some odd reason, people all around the world spend their free-time doing activities that could result in them getting injured, or even risking their lives, whether it's skateboarding, wrestling, rock-climbing, trampoline-jumping or skydiving. The activities that seem the most fun often come with a huge risk of getting hurt, which for some reason is even more enticing. Maybe people think it is thrilling to do something dangerous. Maybe it gives them satisfaction when they complete their activity safely, knowing that there was a big risk of injury or death.

I don't know the psychological reason behind why people love these types of thrills. All I know is that I am definitely one of these people. I grew up with a very cautious dad. Growing up, I wasn't allowed to jump on the bed, run around the house, or attempt at doing a handstand due to the risk of getting hurt. “It’s just not worth it,” my dad would always say. I believe that this is a huge factor that went into my thrill-loving personality today.

I will do anything if it brings up a question in safety. Just last week, my friends and I spent our day wrestling on a raft that was being towed by a boat, speeding 20 mph on a windy day. We are well aware that this could likely result in injury. We are well aware that the last time we did this, we were covered in spotted bruises all over our bodies from being smacked against the water so hard. Do we care? No.

This type of behavior is common in teens because ignorance is bliss. We are too young and naive to know how risky these activities can be. To us, the fun is worth it. I also don’t think it is the type of thing that an adult can drill into our brains. Knowing that just maybe we are going to have to learn the hard way kind of scares me, but I’m way too thrill-seeking and naive to let that stop me in the moment.

  1. I think people have too much time on their hands and have repetitive lives so they want to mix it up by doing crazy activities. Especially after living such a boring life this past year I have also tended to occupy much of my free time with exciting and eventful endeavors.

  3. Yess daredevil activities are so fun. I love doing stupid things that I know are dangerous, whether it be wrestling while on a tube going 20 mph, or writing on the roof of a jeep laying on my stomach holding on for dear life while off roading.
