Zach Klein- week 17- Can't go wrong with Oreos

Who doesn’t love the taste of chocolate wafers with vanilla cream inside? The world’s most popular cookie, Oreos, have been around for a long time. The very first Oreo cookie was created in 1912 in Manhattan by Nabisco. By 1928, Oreos became internationalized as they were distributed to Central and Latin American countries. The Double Stuf Oreos, which many people prefer over the original, were launched nearly 50 years ago! (in 1974). Mini Oreos took the shelves in 1992, as the brand continued to expand. Oreos became so popular by the 21st century when it was revealed that Oreos are consumed by people in nine out of ten households. Oreo had easily become the number one selling cookie in America, in fact; it had become so widespread that it actually became the number one selling cookie in China by 2006. As time progresses, more Oreos are being produced to appease the wishes of consumers. Today, Oreos are found in more than 100 countries creating new flavors all the time. Oreo has made some funky flavors over the years. Most of their unique flavors are limited edition attracting more customers. Some of their past interesting flavors include Wasabi Oreos, Swedish Fish Oreos, Hot Chicken Wing Oreos, Watermelon Oreos, Apple Pie Oreos, Buttered Popcorn Oreos, and Pina Colada Oreos. Oreo is known for its addicting and flavorful cookie, but it also appeals to people with dietary restrictions. Believe it or not, the Oreo cookie is vegan. Shoshana Braverman, a Senior at Rosenblatt High School who chooses to be vegan, loves Oreos. She says, “Since I am vegan there are not many options of cookies that I can enjoy. Oreos are the only ready-made vegan cookies that taste amazing.” Not only are Oreos vegan, but they have come out with a new model that is gluten-free. Hannah Klein, an 8th grader at DKJA has celiac disease and greatly appreciates the new gluten free Oreos. She says that when she was first diagnosed with celiac, she was afraid she would be unable to enjoy some of the foods she had once enjoyed. However, she claims that the gluten-free Oreos are amazing and taste exactly like the regular ones that she used to be able to enjoy. Oreos have done a great job to attract customers with dietary restrictions and continues to make different flavors keeping them at the forefront of the market.

What is your favorite flavor of Oreos?

  1. I saw the gluten free oreos the other day at Publix! That's super cool! I like plain oreos or vanilla (golden)...

  2. I am obsessed with Oreos and cookies/cream ice cream. The best flavor of Oreos are the original ones. I have tried other flavors but the originals are the best. Just like the Star Wars originals (Ex. New Hope...) the remakes are just not as good.

  3. Wow Zach, this is a very insightful article about Oreos! There is (apparently) a myriad of flavors available, and I'm looking forward to trying some. Where are the Oreo thins though? Those are underrated imo.

  4. Please don't tell me you just called it a chocolate wafer... it's a cookie. I do love Oreos and they've been coming out with such good flavors recently, it's amazing. They came out with a Java Chip flavor and it's definitely one of my favorites!

  6. I didn't really understand why so many people liked Oreos until they were made available to me when they started making them gluten free. Of course there were off brand ones before, but according to my friends they are nothing alike in flavor. They might not be my favorite cookie, but I get why they're so popular now.

  7. cookies and cream is hands down the best ice cream in the entire world. Also, have you seen those new lady gaga Oreos? They are so pointless because it is just added unhealthy food dye to create an Oreo that just tastes the same :(
