Gaya Avidor Week 20 - Pick a Poet Blog (Kim Addonizio)

For this month’s Pick a Poet blog, I’ve decided to write about Kim Addonizio’s “Stolen Moments”. Just like all her previous poems I’ve written about, she says whatever comes to her mind. To be honest, this poem is a bit more PG-13 than I expected, but it is only because she was explaining this particular moment in the exact way it was playing out.

In this poem she is talking about how when you are in a situation, sometimes you envision the outcome before it even happens. For example, she explains in this poem that love is a very consuming thing. In her mind, she and her partner have already advanced a level, when in reality they are only sitting “beside the stove [while] [eating] an orange...”. This is a clear example of a time when you might be physically doing something, but in your own mind you are in a different reality.

I thought this was quite interesting because I catch myself many times creating an alternate outcome for moments that I’m living through. Whether it be for the good or bad, it causes me to have the moment stolen away from me by time. I think that is the reason she called the poem “Stolen Moments”, due to the fact that she’s missing out on what’s happening by thinking ahead. This serves as a lesson for us to remember that sometimes we just have to live in the moment and be present, since for all we know it could be gone in an instant.
