Sammy Hodes Week 22 - Recovering From My Injury

As probably anyone who talks to me knows, I tore my ACL and my Meniscus about a month ago in a basketball game. It was one of those freak non-contact injuries that's unfortunately gonna put me out of sports for the next 9ish months.

That being said, I was able to do a ton of physical therapy in the 2 weeks leading up to my surgery on March 2nd (Exactly 2 weeks from today.) The physical therapy that I did allowed my surgeon to successfully operate on my leg and now all that I have to do is recover.

The first few days after surgery were so incredibly painful. You are prescribed Percocets in order to deal with the pain and you are supposed to take 2 of the pills every 4-6 hours. In an effort to not be dependent on the medication I made the decision to only take 1 pill about every 10 hours. While, that decision definitely helped me in the long run, I kicked the painkillers after only 6 days, the days where I was supposed to be taking the painkillers often were so excruciating.

During my surgery, a hole had to be drilled through my leg in order to graft my Patella tendon and make me a new ACL. As a result, the in the first about 12 days post surgery, I dealt with unbelievable bone pain in my leg. I'm happy to say that that pain has now almost fully subsided but it is actually a pain I will never forget.

Now, I am thankfully 2 weeks post operation on my leg. I can fully straighten my leg now and bend to about 90 degrees. I have tons of physical therapy ahead of me but I should be able to walk again without the help of crutches in about 4 weeks. Until then I'm gonna keep getting stronger and building the muscles around my leg so that walking doesn't cause me too much pain.

  1. Sounds terrible Sammy. It seems like you got through the hardest part though, so only good things ahead.

  2. That sounds horrible, but it is great that you have been so great with keeping up with physical therapy (I never was) and have a positive mindset about getting better.

  3. Thats really tough, I know that's not the way you wanted your senior year to end by any means. Hopefully you will be back and healthy before college begins if not sooner!

  4. Aw, I'm really sorry! It's crazy because the I mostly only hear about these kind of injuries from professional athletes, and they also explain how tough the recovery is. So, I can only imagine how hard it must be. At least you've gotten past the worst part, so I wish you a speedy recovery!
