Week 20 - Pick A Poet - "Duplex"

Well it's the final pick-a-poet and I could not be any more excited.  No offense to all you poetry lovers out there, but it’s not for me.  It’s crazy; I never do any poetry throughout high school and now I’m doing it in both my english and spanish classes at the same time.  It’s too much for me.

Anyway there’s my rant for the day (and definitely not filler).  Now back to Jericho Brown.  I was looking for a poem, and I came to realize that I already picked all the interesting ones in terms of content, but I found the poem titled “ Duplex” interesting for another reason.  It was structured very interestingly in terms of appearance.  The stanzas each had two lines, but there was a pattern to them.  The last line of the first stanza ended in the word “own”.  The second stanza began with the words “My last love” and ended in “own”.  Then the second line of that stanza began “My first love” and had a different ending in “car”.  Then the next line had a different beginning but ended in “car”, and so on…

It was a very aesthetically appealing poem to look at.  The poem kind of acted as a visual puzzle, which i quite enjoyed, trying to figure out how the last line connects to the next one.  The actual content doesn’t say anything I haven’t heard from Brown before.  He finds an escape from his life in poetry.  That's the one sentence summary.

  1. I like those poems that are just as visually intriguing, because sometimes you can find the message of the poem without having to read in between the lines too much. And that last line summary is really accurate for many poets - just a way for them to express themselves and escape life.
