Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!
This month is Hispanic Heritage Month. If you haven’t heard of Hispanic Heritage month, it initially started as Hispanic Heritage week by President Lyndon John. Under President Ronald Reagan’s administration, he wanted to expand this celebration of Hispanic culture to be a month-long instead.
The reason the month of September was chosen to host this celebration was due to Honduras, Mexico, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Chile all gaining their independence in September.
During this month, we embrace our heritage from our music to our food and honor the achievements of Hispanic Americans to signify how successful Latinos have become in America.
Because my mother’s whole side of the family is Mexican, I have been exposed to the beautiful Mexican culture. It has made me who I am today and growing up in a proud Mexican household has been such an incredible experience.
Some of my favorite Mexican dishes include enchiladas, pan dulce (sweet bread), Mexican Wedding Cookies, and Tamales. While some of my best memories have been cooking and baking with my Abuelita. I am proud to say I have become quite good at cooking authentic Mexican food.
It is incredible that within 50 years the Latino population has skyrocketed from 5% to 18% in America. It is even projected that by 2050 Latinos will be 30% of the United States population. It is inspiring that despite all of the segregation and discrimination Latinos have faced in America during the 20th century, Latinos are now thriving: many are CEOs of major businesses, are in government, and are scientists, doctors, and engineers.
I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Latino Americans and the change we will enact in America.

What is your favorite South American food dish?
ReplyDeleteIt's so important that there are months like this that are dedicated to honoring other cultures (especially in a melting pot like the U.S.)! Thank you for sharing :) And I've probably eaten more Mexican food than any other food (including Israeli and Cuban) in my whole life haha. I don't think I can choose a favorite South American dish!
