Does Social Media contribute to a more heated political climate? Week 10 Sarah Louis

Does Social Media contribute to a more heated political climate?

Happy election day! I am proud to say that I voted in this election as this is a groundbreaking moment in my life that I have looked forward to since the days of my youth. This election is clearly one of the most important elections in history, yet has become one of the most divisive as well. Clearly, there is major polarization in this country that is apparent everywhere we turn. From political rallies to every street corners there are enthusiastic advocates for either political party. Though the problem arises when people become intolerant of others' political opinions. This has become apparent to me this past week.

Scrolling through social media platforms like Tik Tok and Instagram, I have noticed our generation is very divided. Many are posting fear-provoking videos and paragraphs about what would happen if party X took power vs party Y.  Many are also shunning peers for political viewpoints and beliefs while posting videos degrading the opposite political party. On Instagram, many are using their platforms to openly hate the opposite party. I understand that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but there comes a time when posts and opinions about political beliefs online seep into reality. This passion and hatred could ruin real life relationships, friendships, and the fabric of modern-day American society. Unity during this time is nonexistent which is very disheartening. We are supposed to be proud Americans, but instead, we are hateful of one another. After this election is over, I hope that the tensions in our country will die down but right now I do not know how realistic this hope is.

Do you think social media contributes to tensions in America?

  1. Yes. Social media definitely divides people politically. I hate when people post political opinions. Personally, I would never. The only thing it accomplishes is creating division and tension.

  2. For sure! I mean, while social media can be used for so many good reasons, it has also transformed into a place of hatred, cyberbullying, and societal pressure, influences, and expectations. It's great to speak out about something for the sake of advocacy or spreading the word on false information and whatnot, but openly hating and bashing others is not what social media is intended for! I think everyone is of course entitled to their own opinions, however, I agree that social media fuels to the fire of division in this country :(
