Chaya Brenner - Week 13 - Why do we put so much pressure on ourselves?

Lately, I’ve been feeling the strain of being overwhelmed really strongly. Getting into colleges and feeling like high school is coming to a long-awaited end should relieve some of the pressure, right? But it doesn’t feel like there’s less pressure. We have to keep our grades up so colleges don’t unaccept us and it’s so hard to find any motivation. It isn’t even realistic to think that if you let your grades slip a little colleges will just stop wanting you, but it’s really nervewracking.

And then there’s senioritis, which when combined with stress seems to have created a deadly combo. I simultaneously have no motivation to do anything and am very worried about the work that I do and it’s quality. It’s so weird, and the usual lack of energy from being at home all the time is definitely not helping. For example, I’ve sat down to write this blog post four times so far. I don’t even know if I’ll finish on this fourth time, maybe I’ll need a fifth too.

It’s important to try and do things in between all the work that make you happy. I like to do tarot card readings and draw! Music also really helps me feel more motivated. If I put on a record while I do work it makes it feel easier and a little less stressful (and yes an actual physical record, the sound is much cooler). Making sure to take little breaks and breathe also releases a lot of tension. I read a long time ago that teens can only focus for a maximum of 17 minutes at once, so about every 15 I like to stretch and drink some water!

What do you do to feel less pressured?

  1. I agree with you that I am experiencing Senioritis. However, it doesn't mean that I am getting less work it just means I am unfocused doing it. To answer your question, in order to feel less pressure I go to the gym and play sports.

  2. These are all some amazing points. Focusing has seemed super difficult to me too this year. I think what you said about breathing and just finding things that make you happy are extremely important. Keep doin you and you'll feel good.
