Chaya Brenner - Week 14 - How music brings us together

I am already struggling to think of things to write about, so this week I went to consult the magical prompt list that was provided for us. One question that caught my eye was, “What role does music play in culture?” But then I wasn’t really sure if I wanted to answer that or just really wanted to talk about how much I like Spotify.

Music is universal, no matter what language you speak you listen to it in some way or another. And you may not even listen to it in your language! American music is listened to in a ton of other countries! It’s really cool to meet people from around the world who also like your favorite song. The same goes the other way, of course, music from so many other countries reaches the United States. With the rise of k-pop in the last few years, I think it’s been pretty clear, but also with music in Spanish which I’ve heard on the radio for as long as I can remember.

Music ties everyone together, from couples making collaborative playlists, to a school band, to national choirs, to concerts and broadway shows! People can find others with similar music tastes and become friends through that small thing in common. Better yet, if your friend and you have different tastes, you can learn about new artists and whole genres you’ve never heard of before.

So back to Spotify. What I really like about Spotify is that you can follow your friends and see what music they listen to. It’s a little creepy admittedly but it’s also cool to see what everyone is listening to! As I mentioned before collaborative playlists are also a great feature. Basically you can have multiple people in control of what songs are on the playlist. I just think it’s really cool to be able to share your favorite music like that!

I don’t really know what else to say except that music is just really awesome. It’s so fun to talk about with friends. Though it can be embarrassing to share your favorites, you could turn someone to be a new fan of an artist you like! You could even learn that they already like them and bond over that. Over the summer I was wearing a shirt for a more indie musician I really like named Jack Stauber and this random guy said he liked my shirt. It was super cool to find someone who had heard of him and liked his music!

Which genres are your favorite and why?

  1. Music is my go to, whether I'm getting ready or driving I always have it playing. I would love to listen to your playlists, but I have apple music (which is better).

  2. This is such a beautiful theme. When I went on my Yale summer program in 2019 I was surrounded by students on my program who were from over 60 different countries. We all spoke different languages but music brought us together in our free time when we spent time with one another. Specifically spanish music. I did not realize this genre was so popular in most continents, which was super cool.

  3. I agree, I love music so much! It really is a universal language and is so calming. I listen to almost a lot of genres, except country. I have never gotten into country music, but I am open to it.
