Sarah Louis Week 13- Is Boca Raton the new NYC?

Is Boca Raton the new NYC?

At the start of November, I started to notice out of state license plates on the road. When I would drive through my neighborhood I realized that many of the cars parked in driveways had out-of-state license plates as well. I have spoken at four different Donna Klein open houses the past two months and learned that we gained 12 new families this semester from California and New York. During winter break of course there were a bunch of New Yorkers visiting our incredible beaches, but through the grapevine, I heard that many of these quote of quote vacationers are permanently moving to our delightful city. Numerous trust funds and huge finance firms from New York City have moved down to Boca Raton and from the major cities across the US So why such an influx?

Mainly I would speculate that the root of such actions is due to COVID 19 restrictions in New York. Our governor (for the best or for the worst) has been extremely lenient with restrictions. Most people in states such as New York and California have rarely been able to leave their homes since March because most restaurants, beaches, and mall areas have been shut down or opened with extreme COVID guidelines. Speaking to friends from New York and New Jersey I have learned that many of their friends are moving down to Boca because Florida is a lenient state and they know that Boca Raton and Palm Beach in particular are Florida's economic strongholds. This is going to be great for our economy but Boca will become much more crowded which I have already seen.

Not only has there been extreme traffic on the road, but restaurants in Florida have been packed the past three months, there are more people on the beach, Mizner and there are barely any homes available for sale in Boca.

Do you predict that the dynamics in Boca will shift dramatically due to the influx of New Yorkers?

  1. hmm this makes me wonder what it will be like if I end up going to college in Miami... on one hand, restrictions are lenient so it will be more fun (still staying safe of course), but on the other hand the traffic hahaha

  2. Boca will never become the level that New York City is just for one reason: there is not enough space. I agree that many people are getting frustrated with NY and are moving down here, but not to Boca specifically. Boca has always been a harder area to move to as its very populated. That is why we have seen all these new neighborhoods being built in west boca. You are also not allowed to build up in east boca as tall buildings aren't allowed in the city. Don't ask me why I know all this but i do.
