I’m going to talk about music again for a little, I feel like it’s all I have sometimes. For Hannukah my dad got me a record player! This was a while ago obviously. It’s pastel blue and looks like a thick little briefcase. I asked for one originally because I just liked the aesthetic of playing records, I didn’t know how much more infinitely cooler it is to listen to music on it. I only have four records because they’re kind of expensive and I can’t buy as many as I’d like. But I would listen to them forever. The sound you get on a record player is so cool! It makes me nostalgic for a time that I wasn’t even alive for.
Ok now onto what it made me think about. I realized how much our generation has this fascination with all things vintage and nostalgic. I don’t really know why to be honest but a lot of things that capture our attention these days are old things brought back. For example, I’ve gotten really interested in the royalcore aesthetic. It’s pretty much just Victorian and Georgian era fashion and accessories. It looks so cool in practice though! I could spend all day looking on Pinterest and Etsy at cameos, corsets, fans, gowns, and all the other cool pieces of the look. I have no clue why that is but it really appeals to me.
Another really good example is how everyone loves the 80s now for some reason? I get it and I’m totally on board. It was a super cool time, even though it wasn’t actually that long ago. Why do people like it so much though? There’s just this obsession with nostalgia and the past we all carry. I think it’s really interesting and I really like it actually. Also, support your local thrift shops it helps your wardrobe and it's more sustainable!
Why do you think people are so fascinated by the past and do you have another era you secretly long for?
I personally don't long for an era but I know ariel loves the 80s too. I think it's cool that music is timeless and it can really say a lot about an era and the vibe of the time.
ReplyDeleteI don't really understand all the hype around record players. I feel like they are kind of unnecessary since they are huge and bulky and play worse quality music. I get that it is like cool to be vintage but Idk, not so worth it to me. Same thing with polaroids. iPhone pictures come out so much better and there are apps you can use to make pictures look vintage instead of carrying around a bulky thing where you can't even see yourself when you're trying to take a selfie.
