Chaya Brenner - Week 21 - Learning just to learn

This week on Tuesday I was yet again the only senior who attended our gov/econ class in person. Honestly, I don’t even really mind, Mr. Belotto and I usually have really good conversations! After class ended we had a conversation about the idea of learning just because you can. I personally really enjoy learning as much as I can, especially if I’m previously interested in the topic. It’s actually really fun, no tests, no grades, just new knowledge!

This led to us talking about how in college you can take classes on pretty much anything, there are grades of course, but so much more variety in what you can learn too. I think it’s really exciting and I intend to take as many weird and interesting classes as I can! Mrs. Ho even joined us a little later in and it was really nice to talk about.

Then Amanda and I were hanging out and I came back to this idea in my head. Learning just for the sake of learning. When I asked her how she felt about it she said that she thinks everyone would like to learn just for fun but we have this expectation of what learning looks like pushed on us by years of school and people don’t know it can be different. Amanda is brilliant, and I couldn't agree more with her. Years and years of conventional school have taught us that learning looks like sitting in a classroom listening to someone lecture down to us like children. It doesn’t have to be like that though! Learning can be exploration and discovery, it can be creative and exciting. I think if everyone gave it a chance they might find new interests and they could know so much more about the world around them!

How do you feel about learning?

  1. That's really funny. Sitting on the other end of Gov class on Zoom, I was wondering what it would be like to be in person on your own. I wouldn't have guessed philosophical conversations with Belotto, but sounds fun! And you're right, learning without tests and stress is actually enjoyable.
