Pretty much my entire life, my brother and I have wanted a dog. My parents always said no because they say that after a little while, my brother and I won’t take care of the dog and my parents will be stuck with him. However, my brother and I make the case that it is extremely unfair that both my parents grew up not only with one dog, but more pets. So, finally, after much convincing, my mom let up and helped me convince my dad that we should foster, which is for about 2-4 weeks. That way, nothing is permanent and we are saving a dog from the shelter until he finds someone to adopt him with a permanent home.
Last week, my brother and I went to the shelter to pick a dog. All of this was done through a program called Good Karma Pet Rescue. The first dog we saw, Finn, was absolutely perfect, we knew we had to take him home. He was a little big, about 60 pounds, but he was too amazing to not take. He is 6 years old and just recovered from cancer. I have honestly never met a dog so well trained; the shelter believes that before he had cancer he was in a home that trained him because he is so well mannered.
We brought him home and he was adorable in the car. My parents fell in love with him. He rarely barks, only when he has to pee, and he doesn’t jump or chew anything. I wish we could keep him forever, my family wants to, but we know it is a great responsibility and we want him to get adopted and have attention 24/7. I am really going to miss him when he gets adopted, but I am so glad we fostered him because we saved him and I got to know him.
Do you have a dog?
Wow, what a precious dog!!! Whether it's for animals or children, fostering is such a wonderful and impactful thing to do. And to hear about Finn being a cancer survivor is amazing, as well. With that on top of everything, it's like this is his second time being saved (;-;)
ReplyDeleteAww, he's so cute!! I have so much respect to you and your family for being able to foster a dog. It's such an incredible thing to do and helping find an animal a forever home is beautiful thing. I just know I would get way too emotionally attached and just end up adopting the dog myself, so I admire you and your family for keeping him short term. Do you think you'll get a dog of your own once your older?
ReplyDeleteOkay, Finn is super adorable. I love that you are fostering - I think that is amazing that you are helping these dogs to have a loving home until they find their furr-ever home (yes. I know that was dorky. That is who I am.). That being said, I couldn't do it because every foster would become a foster fail. I'd end up adopting them all and my house would be overrun with dogs. Hmm. Not a bad thought actually...
ReplyDeleteThat is so amazing that you are fostering a dog not many people would do what you are doing.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to foster animals some day (currently impossible for the zoo I live in right now), though I feel like I might get too attached and try to adopt them in the end.
