A big trade occurred in the NFL this week. Matthew Stafford from the Detroit Lions was traded to Jared Goff from the Los Angeles Rams along with 2 first-round picks and a third-round pick. Recently, the Rams have been the better team of the two, but have been unable to win the Superbowl due to what they think is average quarterback performance. They are hoping this trade to acquire Matthews Stafford can push them over the hump. I think this trade is a huge risk for the Rams. They have not had a first-round pick since 2016 and now won't have another one for 4 more years. They are all in on trying to win the Superbowl now. I think that they are in deep trouble if Stafford does not make them any better. Another risk factor in the trade is that they gave up a 25-year-old quarterback for a 32-year-old quarterback. Stafford could regress with his age, but the Rams were willing to take a risk on him. The Rams were very eager as well to get rid of Jared Goff’s overpaid salary. Goff was being paid as the 6th best quarterback in the NFL at 33.5 million dollars per year while playing like an average quarterback. Nowadays, it is hard to win a Superbowl with an average quarterback and the Rams were fully aware of that.
For the Lions, this trade was a success. They were able to get a young quarterback in Goff, even though he is not as talented as Stafford, along with two first-round picks and a third-round pick. Stafford had requested a trade from the Lions and they made the best of their situation.
Overall, I think that the Lions did a good job with this trade and the Rams only had a good trade if they are able to win a Superbowl in the next year or two. Who do you think won the trade?
